CABO ROJO
CITY GUIDE
Cabo Rojo encloses, within its 187 square kilometers, not only a
formidable geographical beauty, but also a range of historical events and
legendary characters. The territory has been inhabited since the very
beginning of the Christian Era. The indigenous, taking advantage of the
abundant mangroves, salt pans and fertile land, supplied themselves with
oysters and yucca as the main elements of their diet. There are still
archaeological traces of Cabo Rojo ancestors engraved and stamped on
ceramic fragments, petroglyphs, and the remains of bateyes found on our
coasts and mountainous areas. As recently as 1990, the skeleton of an
indigenous person corresponding to the ostionoid culture (indigenous
culture developed in Cabo Rojo) and dating back 1,200 years was found
on Isla de Ratones. As early as 1512, the Spanish began to settle in the
vicinity of Morillos de Cabo Rojo to exploit the region’s coves rich in salt.
This resource was the subject of valiant battles, defended with axes in
hand, since the first century of colonization. This is where the popular
name "Mata con Hacha" (“kill with axe”) comes from, and an adjacent
beach where battles were wages, acquires the name "El Combate".
During the mid-nineteenth century, Cabo Rojo became epicenter for
idealists and intellectuals of the time, among whom were Betances, Brau,
Carbonell, and the famous and feared pirate Cofresí. The exploits of these
Caborrojeños marked a milestone in the history of Puerto Rico. Today
Cabo Rojo is recognized as the Internal Tourism Capital of Puerto Rico
due to its more than 30 world-class attractions and its rich variety of
culinary offerings, making it the favorite vacation spot for the locals and,
increasingly, a favorite by many international visitors.

SAVORING THE FLAVORS
1 Cabo Rojo is known for having the best of the local and
international table. From the best and freshest seafood
found on the coasts, to the tastiest roasted suckling pig
(lechon asado) up in the mountains. For generations,
hundreds of Caborrojeño families have distinguished
themselves by offering the best quality and service. From
the La Tuna sector, with tasty lechon asado, and along
Joyuda, on what is known as the Golden Mile of Good
Eating. It has all of the rich Caborrojeño flavors to meet the
demands of all palates. In the following section you will find
a list of most of the restaurants that currently operate in our
town, those that are recognized by the Tourism Company
and those that are not. The taste of everything good is here!
REFUGIO NACIONAL DE VIDA SILVESTRE
2 The Caribbean Islands National Wildlife
Refuge (NWR) Complex consists of nine
separate refuge units located throughout the
Caribbean islands. The headquarters of the
Caribbean Islands NWR Complex is located in
Cabo Rojo on Road 301. The Visitor Center
offers an exhibition of local and endangered
animals, including giant turtles, fish, and birds.
It also offers information for bird watchers, the
history of the refuges, and biking and hiking
trails. It is a highly educational and entertaining stop while visiting Cabo Rojo. On this nature reserve,
you can observe 6 ecological systems: Subtropical dry forest, Hypersaline Lagoons and Salt Marshes,
Seagrass, Marine Lagoons, Coral Reefs, and Mangroves.
LAS SALINAS (SALT FLATS)
3 The Salt Flats in Cabo Rojo, also known as
Pink Beach, is one of the most
underappreciated natural treasures in Puerto
Rico. It is a beautiful place with high
educational value for all ages. Las Salinas is an
excellent eco attraction and one of the most
scenic stops on the west coast of Puerto Rico
in which to admire nature. The hypersaline
lagoons, which naturally have a greater
concentration of salt, were modified for the
production of salt. Water from the Sea is
controlled, then it’s evaporated for the
extraction of salt. Brine shrimp is abundant on the salt flats, they help with the production of salt and
they are one of the factors for the reddish color of the flats. If you look closely, the salt flats look like
abstract works of art. If you’re into nature photography, this is one place you don’t want to miss. The
colors of the salt flats are never the same, they vary with the sunlight, the amount of water, salt, and
organisms in the water.
FARO LOS MORILLOS
4 Faro de Los Morrillos is the
most beloved landmark in the
municipality of Cabo
Rojo. Commonly known as “El
Faro”, it is located at Los
Morrillos Peninsula perched on
commanding limestone cliffs
that drop 200 feet into the
Caribbean Sea. The lighthouse is
fully automated and still shines
brightly helping ships navigate
safely through the Mona
Passage. Faro Los Morrillos was
the second lighthouse built by the Spanish in Puerto Rico, construction began in 1887 and was
completed in 1892. The lantern room was constructed out of cast iron, copper, and glass. The interior
served as a home for the keeper and the family. All the walls were built with brick and mortar. Los
Morrillos Lighthouse is one of the 27 sites included in the National Register of Historic Places. If open,
be sure to go up to the roof platform to enjoy the views. As you step off the cast-iron spiral staircase,
you’ll be wowed by views of the most beautiful beach cove on the main island of Puerto Rico, the
Caribbean waters, the limestone cliffs, the pink saltwater lagoons, marshes, and verdant beautiful
mountains. After having an interior tour, it is time to enjoy the sights around the lighthouse.
LA PLAYUELA BEACH / PLAYA SUCIA
5 Travelers from around the world also
agree that La Playuela Beach / Playa
Sucia is indeed a special beach, this
piece of paradise has been voted as one
of the Top 25 Beaches in the Caribbean
in 2014, 2015 & 2016. Come to La
Playuela Beach, spend lazy days on the
sand or be adventurous exploring all the
surrounding natural attractions and
hidden treasures. No oceanfront hotels
or services here, the naturally dramatic
landscape is what makes this place so
special. The magical sunshine rays of the Puerto Rican sun gives frequent visitors different colors to
enjoy each time. You will notice the water ranging from light turquoise, to emerald green to gorgeous
cerulean tones. The sand changes from sparking white to tones of pink depending on the time of the
day and the light of the sky. Over time, the green kelp turns to brown, then dries soft black, which then
simply disappears into the white sand.
NATURAL BRIDGE
6 One of the most photographed places
in Puerto Rico. If you love to hike, be
enveloped in the wonders of nature,
head to the natural bridge where you’ll
find a unique natural work of art
beautifully formed by water and
wind. The natural bridge has graceful
beauty, taking the spotlight of an
enchanting and magical landscape fit for
a “Pirates of the Caribbean'' scene. The
natural bridge is surrounded by bright
red limestone cliffs, a beach cove fit for a
pirate where the sunset light creates a
dramatic scene like nowhere else on the
island. The flora is lush and dry making the scene mysterious and imbuing it with a feeling of being in a
faraway place. This natural bridge/arch has become one of the most popular sights on the west coast
of Puerto Rico featured in magazines and ads all over the island. Today, locals commonly call this
attraction “El Puente Natural or El Puente Natural de Piedra” (The Natural Bridge or The Natural Stone
Bridge).
COMBATE BEACH
7 Playa Sucia may get the award for most scenic beach location on
the island, but Combate Beach is at the top of the list for having
clearest water, best island vibe scene, most seclusion on non-summer
weekdays, and because it is the longest beach in Puerto Rico, with
over 2 miles of golden sand. Sunsets are an everyday wonder at
Combate Beach. Colors of the water range from deep blue at the
horizon, light turquoise to clear glass swimming areas. Combate Beach
has two very distinct sides: the north side is charming with simple
colorful homes along the shore, fishermen boats, docks, and beach
facilities. The south side of Combate is the most beautiful, with many
dreamy spots, more secluded, and clearer water. You can experience
island life in Combate, a full day of swimming, hiking, relaxing, and
dining.
BOQUERON BEACH
8 Boquerón Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Puerto Rico. This
beach, with numerous palm trees, has an extensive coastline covered with calm
waters. Boquerón Beach is one of the “Blue Flag” beaches in Puerto Rico, a
coveted award given to beaches around the world that meet strict standards,
particularly safety and water quality. It is one of the most visited beaches, where
you can calmly sunbathe on the sand, bathe on the beach, kayak or rest
comfortably in the shady areas. The beach has over a mile of clear golden sand
and, water in various shades ranging from dark navy to crystal clear turquoise.
Beach festivals are held on this beach, and it has an activity center.
BUYE BEACH
9 Buyé Beach is one of the most visited on our
island throughout the year and is known for its calm
waters and a relaxed family beach culture. This
beach offers two different beaches in one place. The
waves are very soft during most of the year, making
it a good beach for families with young children.
Although the beach is well known among the
residents of Cabo Rojo, it is a hidden secret beach
compared to other beaches on the island. With an
immense path of sand for walking, this beach has
beautiful waters of different shades of blue and its
bright sand lined with mangroves allows you to enjoy
pleasant shadows on its shore. Some of the activities
that can be done on this beach are jet skiing,
snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking among others. The
beach has picnic tables, cafeteria, gift shop, billiard
room and bathrooms.
LAGUNA GUANIQUILLA
10 The Punta Guaniquilla Nature Reserve
is one of the most extraordinary places on
the island: a landscape of boulders in the
middle of a lagoon, which could very well
be mistaken for something out of this
world. The reserve is a wonderful paradise
for wildlife in Puerto Rico. It has impressive
limestone formations that emerge from the
Guaniquilla Lagoon, along with spectacular
headlands, constituting a landscape of
unique aesthetic value in Puerto Rico.
These rock formations are part of the
southern karst strip, and date back to
geological processes of more than 11,000,000 years, when the Sierra Bermeja de Laja was just another
island in the Puerto Rican archipelago. Dry forests and grasslands predominate in this reserve, along
with grasslands, mangroves and the imposing Guaniquilla Lagoon. The reserve protects a total of 450.39
acres of subtropical dry forest including wetland and upland wildlife habitats, limestone formations,
two cave systems, and one of the most important examples of subtropical dry forest on limestone rock
in all the island of Puerto Rico.
With 28 miles of coastline, it’s no surprise that Cabo Rojo offers exquisite seafood
throughout the year, but it’s not just a one-trick pony.
Here you will find a full range of restaurant and eateries, from budget options for a quick
bite to splurges with maximum ambience. Listings are going to be separated based on
neighborhoods and cities close to the location of the condo and highly recommended are
going to be labeled with a star .

SAN GERMAN
Puerto Rico’s second oldest town. While there is evidence of its existence as early as the sixteenth
century, San Germán was officially established in 1573, making it the second-oldest city in Puerto Rico
(behind San Juan). In fact, at one point the entire Island was divided into two parts: San Juan and San
Germán. Today the area preserves its nostalgic appeal, with cobblestone streets, neoclassical
architecture, and two meticulously maintained plazas. The entire Historic District is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.

renting your very own small boat or arranging transportation with any of the local tour providers. Some
of La Parguera's most visited cays are Cayo Enrique, Mata La Gata, and Cayo Caracoles. One of the

SCUBA enthusiasts make a point to “Dive the Wall” at La Parguera. Roughly five miles (eight kilometers)

landscape that comprises more than 30 stellar dive sites. This unique terrain, combined with warm
water temperatures and calm conditions, offers an ideal environment for explorers to swim amongst

Papayo Divers
(787) 951-3014
Bioluminescent Bay
La Parguera also lays claim to one of only five bioluminescent bays in the world. The effect is due to a
high concentration of aquatic microorganisms that light up as a method of self-defense; think of them
as underwater fireflies. While Puerto Rico harbors two more bio bays (Mosquito Bay in Vieques and
Laguna Grande in Fajardo), La Parguera is the only one that allows swimmers to get into the water. Tip:
The new moon is absolutely the best time to experience the magic. Even though the bioluminescence
is bright enough to see on every night, the darker evenings will let you see the blue-green plankton
fully.
